Just days after Carlos Beltran revealed to the Mets that he had arthroscopic knee surgery and may not be ready by opening day the team went out and acquired Gary Matthews, Jr. from the Los Angeles Angels for relief pitcher Brian Stokes.

After watching guys like John Lackey, Chone Figgins, and Vladimir Guerrero sign with other teams the Los Angeles Angels made their first major acquisition this off season signing free agent hurler Joel Pineiro to a reported 2-year, $16 million deal Wednesday.

At one time it was believed that the Red Sox, Angels, Mariners, Mets, and potentially the Cardinals all had an interest in free agent left fielder Jason Bay. Now it appears the number of teams seriously pursuing Bay is down to just the Mets.

MLB: Are the Cards the Only Team Negotiating With Matt Holliday?
Matt Holliday is widely considered the top available free agent this winter yet we have heard very little about teams negotiating with Holliday's agent Scott Boras. Is it because of Boras' outlandish claims that Holliday deserves a contract on par with what Mark Teixeira got from the Yankees last year, or, is it because the big market teams like the Yankees and Red Sox are not in the market for a player of Holliday's ilk this winter?

MLB: Mets Make Jason Bay an Offer
The Mets have reportedly offered Jason Bay a 4-year deal worth $65 million which is $5 million more than the Red Sox were offering. Bay has balked at taking the deal thus far and is still holding out for a 5-year deal.
