Philadelphia Eagles
Quarterback
For better or worse the Eagles are committed to Michael Vick at quarterback next season unless they can find someone to take him off their hands for them. Mike Kafka is still a work in progress at the backup spot and Vince Young probably will not be on the roster when training camp opens.
Running Back
LeSean McCoy is arguably the best back in the league right now. Through the first 13 weeks he leads the league in rushing yards and touchdowns. Rookie Dion Lewis has been the team’s primary kick returner and could have a future as a change-of-pace back. Ronnie Brown is unlikely to be back next season.
Wide Receiver
Jeremy Maclin is a rising star at receiver who missed several games due to injury. It remains to be seen if DeSean Jackson will be on the team next summer. He seems to have become a rather divisive presence of late and seems to be sulking over the fact that he does not have a new contract. Jason Avant is as good of a #3 receiver as there is in the league and second year player Riley Cooper has shown flashes of what he can do when healthy.
Tight End
Brent Celek is often over-looked but he is generally good for 50 to 60 catches a year and is tough as nails. Clay Harbor gives them another pass catching option at TE and has yet to show what he can really do.
Offensive Line
This unit is much-maligned but really is not as bad as the media likes to make it out to be. Sure Vick takes too many hits, but a lot of that is simply due to him scrambling and holding on to the ball too long instead of throwing the ball away and living to see another day. Jason Peters is a mainstay at left tackle while rookies Jason Kelce and Danny Watkins man the center and RG spots. Veteran Evan Mathis has fit in quite well at left guard. Todd Herremans has mad the transition to right tackle without too many problems.
Defensive Line
Free agent signee Jason Babin has been everything the Eagles hoped he would be landing among the league’s leaders in sacks. He has alleviated some of the pressure off of Trent Cole who is generally good for 10+ sacks a season. Tackle Cullen Jenkins is one of the best interior pass rushers in the league and has helped to solidify the run defense. Mike Patterson starts at the other tackle spot and Trevor Laws and Derek Landri provide some depth.
Linebacker
This is the weakest unit on the team. Jamar Chaney has been solid in the middle and has shown an ability to drop into coverage. Brian Rolle has shown flashes of ability but he is still extremely raw. After that the linebacking corps is full of unproven talent and career backups.
Secondary
Cornerback was supposed to be one of the strengths of the team. Asante Samuel wants out of town, Nnamdi Asomugha has been a disappointment thus far as has Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who has struggled to get on the field due to injury. Safety has become an issue in large part due to the fact the team is essentially playing a pair of strong safeties in the secondary. Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman both excel at supporting the run, however, they both struggle in pass coverage.
Potential Targets
A lot is going to depend on whether Andy Reid is still around come April. Regardless the team could go in several different directions here. Do they draft Vick’s eventual successor? The new Collective Bargaining Agreement makes it easier for teams to carry a high-priced veteran QB and his successor without having to eat up $25 million in cap space and be on the hook for $100 million in bonus money. If Landry Jones or Matt Barkley are still on the board when Philly picks I would not be surprised to see Philly grab one of them. Robert Griffin, III seems to be rocketing up a lot of draft boards and he could be in the mix here as well. His playing style is more conducive to what Reid likes to do with his QBs. He has an affinity for mobile athletic QBs and he would be the best athlete at the position in this draft.
Their first pick may also depend on whether DeSean Jackson is retained at wide receiver. If the Eagles decide to cut him loose and move on then Justin Blackmon could be a target or they could look to someone like Nick Toon, Kendall Wright, or Mohamed Sanu towards the top of the second round.
The defense also has some definite need areas, specifically at linebacker and safety. None of the true OLBs rate high enough for the Eagles to consider in the first round, but they could look to someone like Zack Brown or Ronnell Lewis at the top of the second.
Alabama safety Mark Barron is a potential first round target as well.
