Lions Sign Vanden Bosch

The Detroit Lions signed another veteran in Kyle Vanden Bosch Friday as the team continues its rebuilding efforts.  The deal is reportedly a 4-year deal worth roughly $26 million.

To be honest this seems like a rather underwhelming acquisition for the Lions.  Vanden Bosch is 31 years old and has been overwhelmingly mediocre the past two seasons.  He had a nice run from 2005 through 2007 when he had 200 tackles, 31 sacks, and 9 forced fumbles, but in the two seasons since then he has just 68 tackles and 7.5 sacks and has missed six games due to injury.

The situation was attractive for Vanden Bosch because he played under Jim Schwartz when he was the defensive coordinator in Tennessee.  Schwartz wants him because he is familiar with the coach’s defensive scheme.  One just has to wonder whether the Lions money would have been better spent on obtaining younger talent rather than an aging veteran who is probably not going to help them win that many more ball games.
