Front Runners for Darren Sproles
Two teams are thought to have emerged as being the front runners to land soon to be former Chargers running back Darren Sproles.
It was rumored that Pete Carroll and Seattle were going to make a pitch for Reggie Bush if the Saints were to let him go. With the Saints declaring they have no intentions of letting Bush go the Seahawks are forced to move on to Plan B.
There is a school of thought that Sproles could be on Carroll’s radar as a guy who has a similar skill set to that of Bush’s. The one thing that has me a bit skeptical of that is the ‘Hawks already have a smallish speed back in Justin Forsett who had a pretty strong season for Seattle last season. He catches the ball well and returns kicks so one has to wonder what a guy like Sproles, or Bush for that matter, brings to the table that Forsett does not already.
The Redskins are rumored to be another team that will make a run at Sproles when he hits the market. Clinton Portis is rumored to be on the chopping block in Washington and Ladell Betts is coming off another injury-shortened season. Nobody ran for over 500 yards for the ‘Skins last season and Jason Campbell was the team’s second-leading rusher. The Redskins desperately need an infusion of play-makers and Sproles is arguably one of the best play-makers set to hit the market at the end of the week.
It was thought that the Niners might have an interest in Sproles given their need for a speed back/kick returner like Sproles. The Niners, however, have said they have no intention on making an offer to Sproles.
