Big Baby on the Move?

ESPN’s Chris Broussard is reporting that the Bobcats and Celtics are discussing a deal that would send Glen Davis to the Bobcats in exchange for point guard D. J. Augustin.  This rumor comes on the heels of reports that the Celtics team chemistry is fraying and the ‘Cats reportedly being interested in adding some depth in the front court.

The rumor is an interesting twist for a couple of players who were seen as building blocks of the future of their respective teams.  Davis turned a lot of heads last summer with an outstanding post season run that saw him average 15.8 points per game in lieu of the injured Kevin Garnett.

Just as Davis’ stock appeared to be rising it came tumbling down last summer.  He failed to land a long term deal with anyone and then hurt himself by punching out a car window.  Reports started to surface about him not getting a long term deal because of issues of his maturity.  Speculation started coming as to when not if the Celtics would deal Davis.

Augustin, on the other hand, was seen as the point guard of the future despite the presence of Raymond Felton.  In fact the Bobcats balked at giving Felton a long term deal last summer due to the assumption that Augustin would be ready to assume the role of starting PG some time this season.  After all Augustin was the guy Larry Brown wanted to draft upon arriving in Charlotte.

Augustin has struggled to find his shot this season while Felton is having the best shooting season of his career.  Felton seems to have reclaimed the favor of Brown while Augustin has struggled mightily this season.

Ultimately, a change of scenery would probably benefit both players and would fill needs for both teams.  With Tyson Chandler struggling to stay healthy and be productive even when he is on the floor the Bobcats would love to find a low post banger to help take some of the rebounding load off of Gerald Wallace’s shoulders and not have to rely on both Chandler and the aging Nazr Mohammed to play significant minutes every night.

The Celtics, on the other hand, need to find a quality backup to Rajon Rondo who can handle the point off the bench.  Current backup Eddie House is more of a scorer than he is a ball handler and other backcourt players like Tony Allen, Marquis Daniels, and J. R. Giddens have struggled to stay healthy and/or earn significant playing time this season.
