MLB: Angels – Jason Bay Over Matt Holliday?
FOXSports.com reports that Angels owner Arte Moreno told a group of reporters that he could see the Angels making an offer to Jason Bay, but, not Matt Holliday. This comes just days after the Angels went on record saying their top priorities this off season are retaining John Lackey, Chone Figgins, and Vladimir Guerrero.
So far several teams seem to be falling over themselves to get to Jason Bay but not so much over Matt Holliday whose agent, Scott Boras, has set an astronomical price tag for.
One wonders if the Angels interest and/or pursuit of Bay revolves around whether they think they can re-sign Guerrero or not. Bay will probably sign for a similar salary level that Guerrero was making last season. It just remains to be seen what Guerrero will command on the open market this winter.
One has to assume that Guerrero, whose hitting has declined significantly over the past three years, and, who is seen largely as a DH for the rest of his career, is not going to command as much as he did the last time he hit the free agent market. He is not the impact hitter he once was and is probably more of a bottom half of the order kind of hitter these days as opposed to third or fourth in the order.
